Tree Rings

Furniture that nests around trees to take advantage of their shade throughout the day

VW_Rings_Street-Config

During COVID-19, NYC instituted an "open streets" program where select streets were closed to vehicles to provide additional outdoor public space. However, no other changes were made - the streets were empty, paved, and hot in the summer from the heat island effect.

Tree Rings is a series of modular furniture that provides seating and gathering spaces that wrap around trees to take advantage of their shade throughout the day. They can be connected in a variety of ways, and feature varying seating surfaces like finished wood, plastic, and fabric mesh.
